The large part of Uda city is Sugi, Japanese cedar, forest. Many of the trees blossoms in March dispersing the pollen which makes my nose running. This year, they produce so much pollen that the mountain was colored with reddish-brown.
Until several decades ago, Sugi lumber of Uda area was very expensive. So many owners of forest cut native deciduous trees and planted Sugi. After inexpensive foreign lumber started flooding in this country, the price of Uda lumber went down drastically. Now the cost of cutting Sugi trees are many times more expensive than the price of them.
The other day, I met a forth-generation lumberman cutting the Sugi trees in my neighbor's property. He cuts and moves out the trees with out charging the fee but receives the lumber. He then sells the lumber to the biomass power plant in O-oyodo-cho, Yoshino-gun. He said that he was determined to keep on doing this work till the end of his career with the hope of reviving native forest which would also be a wonderful habitat for the wildlife.
I was so moved and honored to meet a aspired young man like him. I certainly hope that his dream would come true in a near future.
